Best Neighborhoods In Queens

What makes a neighborhood the best? What is best for you may not be ideal for someone else. We all try to gravitate to people that live our lifestyle. Single adults will rent where there are other singles. Young people raising a family will look for neighbors that are also raising a family. But there are some factors that are necessary for everyone to consider.

In looking for the best neighborhoods in Queens, we looked at the crime rate, the schools in the area, how clean and well-kept the properties are, if there are outdoor activities and parks, and if there was shopping, restaurants, and medical care nearby. From this, we came up with a list that we are happy with. You may be looking for something different, but this is a good starting point.

Astoria

This neighborhood is popular for young professionals. The neighborhood is only a few minutes from the city. The rent is lower here and they have a thriving nightlife. There are plenty of places to eat, shop, and play. The parks are filled with runners and sports lovers on the weekends and also, there are two beer gardens.

Jamaica Estates

This is the neighborhood to turn to if you have a family. The homes are larger and they have more open space. The neighborhood is quiet and safe. Residents are more affluent here, but access to the better private schools in the area makes it worth it. There is also easy access to the midtown area.

Forest Hills

The homes in Forest Hills are family-friendly. The neighborhood has a low crime rate and the homes are well cared for. There is plenty to do. The parks are amazing and there is golf, horseback riding, and plenty of walking and running trails. The average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Forest Hills is $2000.00 per month or less.

Sunnyside

If you need to be closer to Manhattan, you will like Sunnyside. It overlooks the East River and the rent is affordable. The middle-class feel lets you know this area is safe and neighbors watch out for each other. There are plenty of places to go for shopping and dining.

Long Island City

This area is a well blended and diverse area with something for everyone. There are plenty of boutiques, art galleries, museums, and shops. There are fancy restaurants and clubs for the weekend. You can be in the city in minutes via subway.

Bellerose

Suburbia, done New York style. This is for the upper-middle-class executive. The yards are big, and the homes run in the $400K range. There are homes to rent as well. This is for the established family. The schools are very good and the neighborhood is beautiful. This is more the “invite the neighbors for a drink” than the “neighborhood barbeque” kind of place. You have friendly privacy. The neighborhood has everything you need for comfort and fun.

There are many other very nice neighborhoods in Queens. Queens, NY has a large population and often areas will change as families change and grow. Overall, the crime rate is lower than the city and there are shops, museums, and outdoor activities. Queens has adopted the good things brought by city living while maintaining the quiet life of the suburbs.

Best Pizza In Queens

You have to be really brave to open a pizzeria in Queens, New York. Why? Because if there is one thing New Yorkers are serious about, it is their pizza. New York was the landing place for many citizens of Italy and Sicily. These people make pizza like it was intended to be made. The crust is made by hand and is the perfect combination of crispy and doughy. The sauce must be perfectly blended. Mozzarella cheese has to be thick enough to give you the kick of flavor, but not so much as to overpower the pie. Toppings are optional, but if you add one, it must be fresh.

So, we did our best to narrow the list of best pizzerias down for you. Hey, it was tough, but somebody had to do it.

Note: These restaurants are in and around Queens, NY.

Louie’s Pizza

If we were forced to choose just one pizzeria, we would have to go with Louie’s. The pizza is hot and fresh. The toppings are of the highest quality. You can tell these are not frozen or prepackaged toppings. Someone cut them up fresh. The service is good and the prices are always fair.

Long story short, Louie’s Pizza is authentic, New York style pizza.

Margherita’s Pizzeria

This restaurant has been in Queens since 1966, and it is still a local favorite. The old-fashion style of standing at the counter and eating provides retrospective fun. You can order by the slice or buy a whole pie. Everything is fresh and servedquick. The service is always good.

Rosa’s Pizza

This is Sicilian pizza at its best. The crusts are thicker and the cheese is always perfectly melted. The pizza kind of has some kick to it. The price is about the same or a bit more than other places in the area. But, if you want authentic Sicilian pizza, you know it is worth it.

Amore Pizza

This pizzeria is not on the high traffic routes of Flushing. It is tucked away in a quiet shopping area and it is a delightful break from the busy city life. The pizza is delicious and we found the restaurant is calm and casual. It is a perfect way to recover from a tough day at the office.

Gino’s Pizzeria

Let’s face it. If you are going to open a pizzeria in the Queens area and name it Gino’s, it better be some good pizza. Gino’s never lets us down. The pizza is straight up perfect. The sauce is tangy and the cheese is just covering the sauce like any self-respecting Italian chef would make. Gino’s is a busy place, so go early.

Rizzo’s Fine Pizza

Rizzo’s has great pizza, but it is the other Italian dishes on the menu that make you say, “wow!” From the garlic knots to the cannolis, everything is delicious. The best part is the price!

This is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. There are so many more pizzerias in the area that probably should be on this list. You will just have to try them for yourself to see which is best.

Best Restaurants In Queens

It is almost impossible to list which of the restaurants in the Queens area, is the “best.” When you are trying to choose which are the best Italian restaurants versus which are the best American restaurants, how do you compare?

We have selected our favorite restaurants in Queens, New York. We based it on the authenticity of the food, the taste, the atmosphere, and the price. We hope you will enjoy trying to determine which restaurant is “best” for you and that you have quite the delicious journey.

Trattoria L’incontro

This is an upscale Italian restaurant and the food is supreme. Everything on the menu is fresh and perfectly prepared. The restaurant is beautiful and comfortable, and they provide excellent service. They serve all traditional Italian favorites and have wonderful desserts. They have been in business since 1999 and have the facilities to handle large and corporate events. Reservations are accepted.

Salt & Bone Smokehouse

This is a casual place that features barbeque. It is popular for family events. The restaurant is comfortable with lots of windows with wood accents. They serve traditional pulled pork, brisket, ribs and other barbecue favorites. This is a great place for group dinners.

Sugar Freak

This restaurant has the look and feel of dining in New Orleans. They serve authentic Cajun dishes that will blow your mind. They also feature breakfasts favorites like waffles and chicken and biscuits and gravy. This is like taking a trip down south.

Summer Vietnamese

We cannot give them many points for decor. This place is white. That is pretty much it. Everything is white. But, you really will not care if you love traditional Vietnamese food. They have pickled vegetables that they pickled in-house. They serve noodles and teas. If you want good Vietnamese food, this is a top choice. It is clean and the food is reasonably priced.

Desired Taste International

This Chinese restaurant is unique and wonderfully unusual. They specialize in Kao Yang Tui, which translates to Lamb Skewer. The owners are from Northeastern China and the restaurant is already on all of the hot spot lists. The skewers are the largest we have ever seen, as one can easily feed 4 people. Each of you will receive a fork and a knife, which are as long as your forearm. Unusual, authentic, and delicious all in one.

Kathmandu

Another wonderfully original restaurant with authentic Nepalese food. They have a lot of options on their menu. We recommend the pork dumplings and the Chicken Choila.

M. Wells Steakhouse

M. Wells Steakhouse serves steak and burgers. This is not even close to a traditional steakhouse, beef burger, restaurant. They have very odd combinations that are unique and delicious. For example, they offer a 24-ounce burger which is dressed with caviar and foie. This is unlike anything you’ve ever tried before, but you certainly will want to try it again.

Queens has restaurants for Greek, American, Mexican, Japanese and other cuisines. There is virtually a restaurant for any palate in this borough. Finding the best one will take some research (and eating) and still, it probably will end in a coin toss, because they are all really good.

Best Breakfast In Mineola

If you love to go out for breakfast, you have some great places to choose from in Mineola, NY. This list takes into consideration how good the food tastes, the comfort and cleanliness of the restaurant, the costs, and the service. There are fine dining restaurants on Long Island, but we were not looking for those. They may or may not be on our list, but it depends on the food. Enjoy!

Thomas’s Ham & Eggery

This is a little place on an old country road and they make the top of our list! The food is excellent and there is a lot of it. The prices are very reasonable. You may not notice the place unless you are looking. But ask anyone, they are sure to know where it is.

La Bottega

Authentic Italian restaurant with breakfast, brunch, salads, and sandwiches. It is a very nice restaurant and the service is wonderful. This is a place to go for a nice meal, not a quick bite. You will want to relax and take your time.

Second Street Deli & Cafe

They serve breakfast and brunch. They are best known for their deli sandwiches, but there is a pretty good selection. They get extra points for being super friendly and polite. Nice to see old fashion customer service.

Garden City Bistro

Get there early or be prepared to wait. Garden City Bistro has the best wraps in the city. Good food, good serving sizes. There usually is a line, because they are so popular and because the food is that good.

My Three Son’s Bagel Cafe

Very good for something a bit different. The bagel with meats is a favorite and it comes with a salad. We don’t know how they serve that much food for the price, but we are not complaining. Give it a try.

Sarabeth’s

This is traditional American food at its best. They have a good selection and I think our group tried almost all of it. Good for breakfast and lunch but come back for a drink later.

Stella’s Cafe

Traditional American breakfast and brunch. The comfort level is off the charts with their big booths. The food was hot and served quickly. Yes, you will go back.

Park City Breakfast

Good breakfast selection and good lunch selection. They also have fantastic burgers. For a mid-morning group, this is the place to go. Everybody is happy. Prices are not great, but not bad either. Perfect for the folks who all want something different.

Chris’s Deli

American food, good breakfast, and very good sandwiches. The best part of the experience was the service. The staff treats you like family. They are always good to see you.

Mineola is not that big of a city, so it is amazing that there are so many great places to eat there. Mineola is a short train ride from New York, so maybe that’s where everyone comes from. All we know is that the restaurants are always hopping and the griddles are always cooking.

Defenses for Domestic Violence

If there is one place in the United States that you do not want to go to court for a domestic violence charge, it is New York. The court systems are overloaded, and they are doing their best to prevent habitual offenders from slipping through the cracks. Police are quick to make an arrest and will do their best to make sure the couple stays away from each other for as long as possible before trial. This is especially true if the officers are called to that address often enough to remember them.

Even if the victim has calmed down and tells the police that he or she doesn’t want to press charges, in most cases, if 911 was called, someone is going to jail. The chances are good that a restraining order is going to be served and this couple is going to have to find a new place to live while they wait to go before the courts. Many times, one spouse must move out while the case is open, as well as figure out new transportation and childcare. If you are facing domestic violence charges, it is critical that you hire an experienced attorney who will fight for your side in court.

Your Spouse is No Longer Angry, You Want to Work it Out.

If you want to reconcile with your spouse after a domestic violence charge, you have the right to do so, but the court will still move forward with the case. Your spouse may even say they will not testify against you and you could still go to court. That is because it is not your spouse that is pressing charges, it is the state of New York.

Why Do You Need an Attorney?

Time is not on your side. If the police were told that you struck your spouse, then you are going to have to prove to the best of your ability that they were not telling the truth. You need to call a domestic violence attorney first. Do not just talk to the police thinking they will understand. Don’t think this is a minor thing and you can tell the judge what they want to hear to end the case.

Evidence

Your attorney will take photographs to determine the following:

  • Are your hands red or bruised?
  • Did you suffer from scratches on your face, arms, or back?
  • Is the house in disarray showing there was a fight in there?
  • Were there any witnesses?

Video

Is there a violent history in your household? If there is or isn’t the people who live near you probably know about it. If your spouse claims you hit them at the bank when you were using the ATM, it is on video. If they say you hit them in the parking lot of the grocery store, there is a video. There are few places you can go today without being recorded. This is something our domestic violence lawyers will find.

The goal of your attorney should be to resolve the dispute between you and the state. It is everyone’s best interest if things can be resolved peacefully and with lasting effect.

Different Types of Assault Charges in New York Explained

As assault and battery lawyers, we know that assault is a very serious crime. It carries harsh consequences. The state of New York, in recent years, has defined and adjusted assault laws to protect victims and to help convict those who hurt others.

At this point, there are 10 different ways you can be held accountable for assault in New York. We will give you an overview of the most commonly used laws. There are various ways that the charges can evolve. It depends on the extent of someone’s injuries, if a weapon was used, and if it happened while you were trying to break another law.

Assault is when you cause pain to someone else. You may have shoved the person, and there are no lasting injuries. If the person reports that they felt pain, it is an assault. The different levels of assault are deep and long-reaching. The charges can be stacked on a person. You may be charged with assault, but due to the way it was carried out, you could get charged with reckless indifference, battery, and any number of other charges. There are times when your assault conviction opens the door for civil suits against you for payment for pain and suffering, stress, and other issues. The charge of assault has a wide spectrum, and you do not need to take it lightly.

If you have been charged with assault, you need to contact an assault and battery lawyer. You need someone who understands the complexity of the laws.

Assault in the 3rd-degree

Simply put, if you cause injury to someone or in your attempt to cause injury to them, you injure someone else. That is a 3rd-degree assault charge. An example of this is if you are angry at me and try to hit me, but you missed and hit the person next to me, you have assaulted them. It doesn’t matter if that was not your intent. This is a misdemeanor charge.

Assault in the 2nd-degree

If you show intent to cause someone injury or if by trying to injure someone with a dangerous weapon, you injure someone else, this is a 2nd-degree charge. Depending on the circumstances, this can be a misdemeanor, or it can be charged as a felony which carries fines and up to 7-years in jail.

Assault 1st degree

Assault in the 1st degree is when you cause injury to someone else, using a deadly or dangerous instrument and that you intended to cause the injury. It is also an assault when you injure someone, and you intended to hurt them seriously or disfigure them permanently. The charges become even more serious if it is proved that you injured someone in a way that showed you had a depraved indifference to human life. Finally, assault is when you seriously injured someone while committing a felony act.

Example: You were attempting to rob a store, and a fight breaks out. Another customer gets injured. Though it was not your intent to hurt them, they were hurt because you were trying to rob the store. This is a felony which carries mandatory jail sentences that can range from 5-years to 25-years.

Assault is complicated and is usually the gateway for other charges. If you are being charged with assault, please contact an assault and battery attorney.

Different Types of Battery Charges in New York Explained

The crime of battery is often coupled with assault charges. They are two different crimes, but battery cannot happen without assault. Battery is when you physically strike, hit, and/or (sometimes) grope a person without their consent. This is a serious charge that will impact your life if you are convicted. The degree of the charge, depends on the seriousness of the crime, the amount of damages that occurred, and if a weapon was used. These different factors of the crime will affect the level of the charges brought against you. We will explain the commonly used laws, but urge you to contact an assault and battery attorney if you are being charged with battery. It is not uncommon for the degree of a battery charge to morph the crime from a misdemeanor to a felony.

Battery in the 3rd-degree

This is the sister charge to assault in the 3rd degree. If you injured someone and intended to do so, you committed battery. It does not matter if the pain was minimal (like a slap in the face) or if the person did not seek medical attention. If you strike them or strike someone other than them while trying to strike them, you can be charged with battery. This carries fines and up to 1-year in jail.

Battery in the 2nd-degree

This is the next step up in battery charges, and the penalties are harsher. If you assault someone, and intended to hurt them, (even if you do not seriously hurt them), and caused some harm to come to them, it could be battery in the 2nd-degree.

As you see the difference between 3rd-degree and 2nd-degree depends on various factors in each case. Of course, your attorney will be working to get the charge reduced to the 3rd-degree misdemeanor charge. If you caused significant bodily harm (such as a broken bone) the charge is usually 2nd-degree battery, which carries a mandatory jail sentence of up to 5 years in jail.

The difference in these charges can be due to how you assaulted them. If you used a deadly weapon or hurt them with complete disregard of what could happen to them or others, then your punishment will be more severe.

Battery in the 1st-degree

While there are various factors that could affect the weight of the charges, the next big step is battery in the 1st-degree. This is when you used a deadly weapon and hurt someone. You intended to hurt them, and they were harmed significantly. A deadly weapon can be anything from a gun or knife to an automobile or baseball bat. If it was used as a weapon to hurt someone and they were hurt, the charge becomes 1st-degree battery, and the sentence can range from 5-years in jail to 25-years in jail. There are also significant fines, and you could also be charged in civil court for damages.

The justice system will do everything within their power to maximize the charges. There are so many factors that can directly affect this type of case. Only experienced assault and battery attorneys will do. If you are facing charges of this nature, understand they can quickly grow. Contact an attorney right away.

How To Get Help In New York For Your Drug Addiction

If you have reached a point where you want to kick a drug addiction or help someone you love reclaim their life, congratulations. The journey to get to this point has been difficult and frightening. There are many aspects to getting help.

Intervention

If a person has come to the realization that they need help, or if you can get them to see the problem before the addiction has taken over their entire life, they may agree to go to treatment. If this happens, you are one of the very few lucky families in this situation. More often than not, they will refuse to accept they have a problem. Some admit they have a problem, but think they can beat it on their own.

If your loved one refuses to seek help, an intervention may be necessary. You may have seen the show on television by that name and it is accurate (though not always as dramatic). An intervention is when the family comes together and designs a recovery for the family unit. This is where you tell the addict how their addiction is hurting them and what is going to be done. Everyone in the family has a part in this process and often the family needs therapy to stop the cycle. This is forcing the addict to hit rock bottom.

Detox

Many private rehabilitation centers have a detox center, but some do not. Depending on the drug of choice, they may have to go through detox. This is where they flush the drugs from their body. This is the worst part of recovery. Withdrawal is horrible.

There are cases where a patient must be weaned off of a drug. Xanax, for example, is a drug that can bring on seizures and could kill a person if they have been taking it for a long time and stop it suddenly. Other drugs may be introduced to help the patient get through the detox part of the program. In some cases, a patient will be switched from their drug of choice to a drug like methadone that will prevent them from getting high. However, unless they want to stay on methadone forever, there will come a time when they have to detox. Your doctor and the treatment center will help determine the path of action for you.

Rehabilitation

There are a few different ways this happens. You can use an inpatient program. This is where you enter the rehab center for 30, 60, or 90-days. There are some long-term facilities for issues that require more time. You get clean and they begin to teach you the tools to stay clean and live a better life. This includes a lot of therapy and education about your addiction. If you go to an outpatient program, you will come to the center for your therapy medication, and for therapy. But you will live outside of the facility.

There are facilities (which are costly) that admit you and sedate you. While under sedation, your detox takes place. When you wake, you are clean and the drug is out of your body. However, you will still need a major amount of help. You did not suffer the discomfort and pain, but you still have the mental process of an addict. Only with therapy can you cure the dependency issue.
